Drivers Widget is a handy and lightweight Android widget for use in cars, bikes or even on foot.
Making use of the GPS in your device, it can record the distance run in total and partial values, like the car’s odometer. The “Trip” function helps keeping the partial value linked to the last use of the vehicle by automatically resetting it when a new trip is detected. It can also show the current speed. There are many configuration options accessible on the main application window. Some of them are pretty useful like the option which turns on the widget (and thus the GPS module) automatically when connected to a car dock.
Let’s check out the other Drivers Widget’s features:
- A high precision mode when disabled helps to save power.
- The distance unit can be set to kilometers or miles.
- It lets you choose form 7 widget layouts, which is good for customization but bad for the widget list.
- Finally there are some advanced features, like NMEA logging which can be used to parse the GPS information with another compatible application, for further processing.
This Android widget is free but there is a “pro” version of Drivers Widget available on the market, which adds a couple of features: multiple vehicles and themes. Using the application is very easy: it is unobtrusive, stable and reliable; just take care of the battery level because, if you leave it on for a long time without charging, it’ll quickly empty your battery (as any other program which makes use of the GPS, that is…).
